STREAM was birthed on the Spring Equinox, March 20, 1999. The activities of our first three meetings (spring session) revolved around nature's renewal and the qualities associated with spring, such as: new beginnings, growth, inspiration, clarity.
We learned about traditional holidays celebrated at this time of year, and about mythological spring goddesses from different cultures. We entered the Native American medicine wheel at it's Eastern point and learned about the many teachings this direction has to offer us. We made colorful paper-mache' egg rattles filled with beans and "vision-seeds" (slips of paper on which we wrote what new things we wanted to bring into our life.) We learned spring songs and went on nature walks, taking notice of the newly sprouting plants and flowers. Woven throughout all these activities was our study of the life and art of Georgia O'Keeffe, as well as our drawings and watercolor paintings of flowers inspired by her amazing works of art.
Our first summer session took us to: the South point of the medicine wheel, Summer Solstice and Lammas, summer/sun goddesses Amaterasu, Pele and Demeter, linoleum block sun prints, carved clay plaques, still-life watercolors, African art and design, and the work of artists Betty LaDuke, Henri Mattisse and Paul Gauguin, among others.
STREAM was founded by sisters Mara Berendt Friedman and Karen Russo, both artists who want to share their love of beauty, creativity and self-expression. Their vision is that "STREAM-inspired" schools will sprout up in other communities, each with it's own unique focus, and all dedicated to nourishing the creative spirit of our children and the magical child within us all.
