Images of Spirit, Empowering Women, Honoring the Sacred Feminine Anini

1994 Mara Berendt Friedman
acrylic on canvas, 16 x 20 in.
This is a very early work is greatly inspired by my island home, as well as one of my favorite artists, Paul Gaugain. At the time of this painting, I was living on the north shore of Kauai in charming Anini and this powerful goddess represents the spirit of this special place. In her hand she holds a grounding volcanic rock and before her lies the colorful Kaimani leaf. This image is painted in a traditional style, which soon morphed into the more stylized and abstract style that I continue express myself thru.
